Crochet Hot Pads 101
I think there are a few “rules” shall we say when crocheting hot pads and potholders.
- The crochet stitches used should have no holes or gaps.
- The yarn used should be durable and shouldn’t melt.
- The finished hot pad should protect the surface you are putting them on.
- Hot pads should be fun and cute.
Okay, so the last one is a personal opinion. Otherwise, these crochet hot pads check all the other boxes!
We are using just basic stitches here, but there are no holes and gaps in the stitching. They are also double sided to further ensure they are extra thick and durable to protect the surfaces you’re using them on.
Lastly, we are using 100% cotton yarn for these hot pads. Cotton yarn is durable, should not melt when hot dishes are placed on top, and will hold up after washing.

I think together, they make a great set! I decided to make two different colored apple ones because 3 just seems like a good number to have in a set. Before starting this project, be sure to have enough yarn for all three!
Free Crochet Apple Hot Pad Pattern
Materials
I Love This Cotton! In Burnt Sienna, Ivory, Sage, and Brown – 1 skein each
(You can use any brand of worsted weight cotton yarn.)
4.00mm crochet hook
Tapestry needle + Scissors

Beginning chain does not count as a stitch.
Number at the end of each round in parentheses is the number of stitches for that round.
Bobble stitch: *YO, insert hook into st, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through two loops, repeat from * 3 more times into the same stitch, YO, pull through all loops on your hook
Dimensions: Measures approximately 9” across.

Ch = chain, hdc = half double crochet, hdc2tog = half double crochet two together, st = stitch
Crochet Pattern
Start with ivory colored yarn.
Round 1: Magic ring, ch 1, 10hdc into ring, join to first st (10)
Round 2: Ch 1, 2hdc in each st around, join to first st (20)
Round 3: Ch 1, *hdc in next st, 2hdc in next st, repeat from * around, join to first st (30)
Round 4: Ch 1, *hdc in next 2 st, 2hdc in next st, repeat from * around, join to first st (40)
Round 5: Ch 1, *hdc in next 3 st, 2hdc in next st, repeat from * around, join to first st (50)
Round 6: Ch 1, *hdc in next 4 st, 2hdc in next st, repeat from * around, join to first st (60)
Round 7: Ch 1, *hdc in next 5 st, 2hdc in next st, repeat from * around, join to first st (70)
Round 8: Ch 1, *hdc in next 6 st, 2hdc in next st, repeat from * around, join to first st (80)
Round 9: Ch 1, *hdc in next 7 st, 2hdc in next st, repeat from * around, join to first st (90)
Round 10: Ch 1, *hdc in next 8 st, 2hdc in next st, repeat from * around, join to first st (100)
Change to red or green yarn.
Round 11: Ch 1, *hdc in next 9 st, 2hdc in next st, repeat from * around, join to first st (110)
Round 12: Ch 1, *hdc in next 10 st, 2hdc in next st, repeat from * around, join to first st (120)
Fasten off. With brown yarn, sew on apple seeds. Make two lines using the photo above as a guide, go over each line 3 times.
Using red or green, make another circle for the back of the potholder. You will not change colors, make the whole circle with the red or green yarn. Fasten off.
Hold both circles together (wrong sides facing in) and single crochet them together. Fasten off.
Leaf and Stem
Hold the apple so the seeds are vertical lines. We want to center the leaf + stem so it lines up with the seeds. The stem + leaf spans a total of 6 stitches.
Attach green yarn on the apple so it lines up to the right of the right apple seed. Chain 20, slip stitch into next st. Fasten off.
Attach brown yarn into next st.
Row 1: Ch 1, hdc in next 4 st, turn
Row 2: Ch 1, hdc2tog, hdc2tog, turn
Row 3: Ch 1, hdc across
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Border
Attach red or green yarn to next st next to stem. Ch 2, *bobble in next st, sc in next st, repeat from * around. Fasten off and weave in ends.
